Mike Le-Surf - The Labour Party prospective parliamentary candidate for the new constituency seat of Rayleigh and Wickford.

A future fair for all

Welcome to my campaign website.

As an Essex resident I am delighted to have been selected to stand  for Labour. I am working hard to make sure constituents are aware of the benefits of electing a Labour government for a fourth term at the next general election.

There is a real choice at the next election and in a new seat, such as Rayleigh and Wickford, there is everything to fight for.

AN ACCESSIBLE WEBPAGE

As a worker in the field of learning disabilities for many years I am aware of the need to make our Labour Party information accessible to all citizens. This is an accessible webpage with information about my campaign along with photos of campaign activity and contact information to Labour Party colleagues in the region. If you require further information regarding my campaign please email me at voteformike@mikemp.co.uk and I will contact you directly.

SPEAKING UP FOR RAYLEIGH AND WICKFORD

Residents of Rayleigh and Wickford deserve a Member of Parliament who will speak up for them in Westminster and in the constituency. I have built a strong reputation as an independently minded  borough councillor in Brentwood who works hard for local people. I became involed in party politics after the introduction of the Labour goverment white paper "Valuing People" promoting rights, inclusion, choice and independence for people with learning disabilities. I have fought hard against the exclusion and disempowerment of vulnerable adults in our communities and feel passionately about inclusion for all. How we treat our most vulnerable citizens is the most important test for any society and government. I will be delighted and proud to be elected in Rayleigh and Wickford as an advocate for all citizens.

RECENT CAMPAIGNS

I am currently campaigning for the introduction of the Labour policy for free swimming for the over 60s and under 16s in the constituency districts of Basildon and Rochford. The current Tory run administrations have so far refused to offer free swimming to Rayleigh and Wickford citizens.

SAVE WICKFORD MARKET

I am campaigning with local traders and residents to save Wickford Market currently under threat from the local council. Traders are being kept in the dark over these proposals and Labour members in the area have been active in voicing their support for local people.

WHAT DOES MIKE LE-SURF STAND FOR?

Mike Le-Surf believes in an inclusive society where all citizens have an equal opportunity to reach their potential and contribute fully to their local community.

WHAT DOES MIKE LE-SURF HOPE TO ACHIEVE FOR RAYLEIGH AND WICKFORD?

Residents must be in control of decisions made about how they live their lives through the democratic process. Mike Le-Surf hopes will represent the citizens of Rayleigh and Wickford fully and speak up for them in Westminster and within the constituency.

EXPENSES

Mike will not claim for a second home allowance or for rent on a property in the capital. He plans to continue to travel to work like all citizens on a daily basis.

WHY LABOUR?

The Labour Party continues to support the most vulnerable members of our society and works hard to break down prejudices. The national minimum wage, civil partnerships, the smoking ban in public places and Surestart children's centres are a few policies that Mike Le-Surf is proud of and which would not have seen the light of day under a Conservative government.

A CLEAR PICTURE OF MIKE LE-SURF’S VALUES

1: A strong and efficient National Health Service in public hands: “Our NHS is envied around the world and universal healthcare free at the point of need is something we must be prepared to fight for. Labour has built many new hospitals in the UK over the past 12 years after years of Tory neglect.”

2: Nationalised Rail Services: "I will fight for the rail network to be brought back into public control.”

3: Supporting Free Nationwide Bus Travel for the over 60s: “A superb Labour initiative that was reluctantly accepted by Essex Tories. This policy needs to be protected at all costs as an empowering tool for people on a low income.”

Mike with Equalities Minister Harriet Harman: February 2010

4: Free Swimming for over 60s and under 16s: “Another Labour policy which has been rejected by many Tory district councils including Basildon and Rochford. I will fight for the introduction of free swimming in both areas of the constituency.”

5: Comprehensive Secular Education for All: “Communities lose out when our youngest citizens attend schools far from their homes. All children should have the best options for secular education within their local areas for nursery, primary, secondary and further education."

6: A Mixed Economy and Protection for Workers Rights: “Thriving economies need a strong mix of public, private and third sector opportunities. As a member of UNISON I will fight for the rights of workers to enjoy safe, healthy and vibrant workplaces.”

7: No to Trident Replacement: "As a member of CND I strongly oppose the replacement of Trident missiles.

The UK should be leading the disarmament agenda, freeing up vital funds for advancing healthcare and education.”

8: Supporting Renewable Energy Options: We need to advance the delivery of renewable sources of energy. Wind-farms, solar, tidal and other options should be fully funded and explored as cleaner options to current energy sources.”

9: Supporting the Third Sector: “Provisions from third sector organisations and charities are a vital part of our local communities and economies. The knowledge base and experience of people working in these sectors is priceless and deserves full recognition from other service providers and the government. Many of our most vulnerable citizens are supported by the third sector which usually has the trust and respect of local people.”

10: Council housing: “The government has realised the need for councils to be able to build a new wave of council housing for the 21st century which I fully support. This will go some way to addressing the needs of people who cannot or do not wish to get onto the housing ladder and help communities keep hold of workers in key, but often low paid industries.”

11: Stronger Immigration Requirements: “I fully support tougher immigration measures for people from outside the EU wishing to live and work in the UK introduced recently by the government. Our nation has always welcomed citizens from other countries, religions and cultures and we need the skills and support that the rest of the world has to offer. We need to make sure that people who do wish to live in the UK fully contribute to our nation and have the skills and experience that we need to grow.”

12: Promoting our Nation: “The UK has a rich culture and heritage that should be the pride of every citizen in Britain. All citizens have the right to feel proud to be English, British and European. Equally, we should always respect the heritage and cultures of people from other nations."

13: Promoting Inclusion: Dated prejudices have no place in a modern society. The Labour record of breaking down prejudice and discrimination regardless of faith, race, sexuality, disability and age is one I am proud of and fully support.”
